Baby Costumes You Can Make Yourself

Turn your infant bunting, baby sleeper or toddler togs into a cute-as-a-pumpkin first costume. None of these ideas will take you more than an hour to make, and not one requires a stitch of sewing.

A few tips before you start:
•    Avoid costumes that involve tails if Baby will be traveling by stroller.

•    Take care of the details, like trimming edges, before you dress your baby, but apply makeup last.
•    Change your baby's diaper right before you get him dressed.
•    If your baby keeps pulling off her hat or headband, put it aside. She'll be just as cute, if a little less lion-like, without it.
•    Take your Halloween photos as soon as the baby's dressed - the costume's not going to look as good ever again!

Have fun!

 Lion Cub

Good for Newborns and infants
Time 45 minutes
What you'll need A yellow outfit (bunting or a onesie and tights), a yellow baby hat with ties, brown or tan felt, a hot glue gun, and a brown eyeliner pencil.

1. For the tasseled tail: Cut one 12" x 1" strip of felt and six 3" x ½" strips. Using the glue gun, attach the six strips to one end of the 12" strip. Glue the plain end of the tail to the back of the bunting.
2. For the head: Cut a few dozen additional 3" x ½" strips of felt. Starting at the front of the hat, glue one end of a strip to the cap and repeat with additional strips, working in a row. Create more rows of strips until the hat is covered, cutting additional strips as needed.
3. Let your costume dry overnight.
4. Dress Baby in the bunting and hat (trim the front row if the strips fall in Baby's eyes).
5. For babies over four months, using a brown eyeliner pencil, draw a solid nose and some whiskers.
6. Snap! Take a picture.

Baby Chick
Good for Stroller-bound babies
Time 35 minutes
What you'll need A white onesie, a white hat, yellow tights, yellow rubber kitchen gloves, white feathers, an 8" x 5" piece of red felt and a glue gun.

1. For the body: Glue feathers all over the onesie.
2. For the head: On one long side of the red felt, cut a scalloped edge. Glue the opposite, straight-edge side to the top of the hat. Let dry overnight.
3. Dress Baby in the tights, onesie, hat and some shoes. Make “chicken feet” by pulling yellow rubber gloves over the shoes (trim down some of the length in the hand if necessary).
 4. Snap! Take a picture.

Baby Dalmatian
Good for Babies and kids of all ages.
Time 25 minutes
What you'll need White sweatpants, a hooded white sweatshirt, black felt, a hot glue gun, a dog collar or ribbon, and a black eyeliner pencil.

1. For the body: Cut circles from the black felt in varying sizes (cut them freehand, or trace circles using quarters, cups, and other round objects). Glue the circles all over the arms, legs, front, back and hood of the sweats.
2. For the head: Cut two ears from the black felt and glue them to the sides of the sweatshirt hood.
3. Let your costume dry overnight.
4. For older children, top off the outfit with a red dog collar. For younger children, use a red ribbon tied in a bow. If your baby is over four months, use a black eyeliner pencil to blacken the tip of the nose.
5. Snap! Take a picture.

Little Fish
Good for Newborns and infants
Time 40 minutes
What you'll need Brightly colored bunting, about one yard of felt in a matching color, fabric scraps, chalk, a tape measure and a hot glue gun.

1. To make a “fish tail” that you’ll attach to the bottom of the bunting: Fold the felt in half and using the chalk, draw a two-pronged fish tail. The top should be as wide as the bottom of your bunting, and the bottom should be about 1½ to 2 times as wide. With the felt still folded, cut around the chalk lines, so you have two "tails."
2. Glue the two tails together by pouring a line of glue around the perimeters edge, leaving the top open. Glue sides and holding them together. Then, put a line of glue around the top and tuck the bottom of the bunting into it.
3. For the fish head: Measure around your child's head just above the ears. Cut a piece of felt that is the same number of inches as the head plus one inch, and about 8 inches high. Overlap the short ends by about ½ inch and secure with glue.
4. Cut the fish head on an angle at the sides so it becomes a triangle with the point in the middle (this will be the mouth of the fish).
5. From your fabric scraps, cut four circles (two about 2" in diameter, and two about 1"). Place the smaller circles on the larger ones and glue them to the sides of the fish hat to make “eyes.” Let everything dry overnight.
6. Dress your little fish.
7. Snap! Take a picture.

Black Cat
Good for Toddlers and kids of all ages.
Time 35 minutes
What you'll need A black outfit (a sleeper, sweats, or a leotard, T-shirt or onesie and tights), an adult-sized long black sock, black and pink construction paper, a black headband, a white feather boa, black eyeliner and a hot glue gun.

1. For the tail: Stuff the black sock with other socks or paper and glue it to the back of the outfit.
2. For the ears: Cut a pair of ears out of black construction paper. Cut a slightly smaller pair the same shape from pink construction paper and glue them to the black ones. Glue black-and-pink ears to the black headband.
3. Cut the feather boa into small sections and glue them around the collar and in a line down the front of the outfit. Let everything dry overnight.
4. Dress your child and draw a nose and whiskers on his face using the black eyeliner.
5. Snap! Take a picture.

Baby Bumble Bee
Good for Kids of all ages - especially little ones who might fall asleep mid-party (zzzzz)
Time 25 minutes.
What you'll need A yellow onesie, T-shirt or leotard, black tights, black electrical tape, a close-fitting black baby hat, two black pipe cleaners and two small gold or yellow Styrofoam balls (paint white ones if you can't find yellow).

1. For the body: Create thick black stripes across front and back of the onesie or leotard using two slightly overlapping lengths of electrical tape for each stripe.
2. For the head: Cut two small, parallel slits on each side of the hat where you want the "antennae" to go. Feed one end of a pipe cleaner into the cap through a slit and pull it about 1/2 inch out through the other slit. Twist the two sections of pipe cleaner together just at the base to secure it to the hat. Pull the other end straight up and push it into one of the balls. Repeat with other side.
3. Dress Baby.
4. Snap! Take a picture.

Sweet Pea
Good for Newborns and infants
Time 30 minutes
What you'll need Green bunting or sleeper, a green hat, light- and medium-green felt and other green fabric scraps, tissues and a glue gun.

1. For the pod: Cut an oval out of the light-green felt big enough to cover your child’s torso, and glue it to the chest of the outfit.
2. For the peas: Cut six 3" circles from the medium-green felt. Place a line of glue three-quarters of the way around the edge of one circle and lay another circle over it. Repeat with remaining circles to make three peas. Let dry overnight. Then gently stuff tissue paper between the layers felt to make the peas three-dimensional.
3. Glue the three peas in a row to the center of the light-green oval. Apply a little glue to the open part of the peas to close them.
4. For the stem: Cut “leaves” and long strands of green scrap fabric and glue them to the top of the hat to make tendrils. Let dry overnight.
5. Dress Baby.
6. Snap! Take a picture.

Octopus
Good for Kids of all ages
Time 30 minutes
What you'll need Purple clothing (sleeper, or onesie, sweats and socks), a purple hat, three pairs of baby or children’s tights in different shades or patterns of purple, one long or two short shoelaces, batting (optional), a hot glue gun and gold or silver glitter.

1. For the six tentacles (your child's legs serve as two the additional ones): Stuff all six legs of the tights with batting (you can also use extra fabric scraps, rolled-up paper towel or toilet paper.). Lay all three pairs side by side, and place a shoelace – or two shoelaces tied together (you’ll need enough length to tie around your child’s waist) – about an inch below the tops of the tights. Generously apply glue around the shoestring and fold the tights over the top. Let dry overnight.
3. For the head: Create “eyes” on the hat by making small glue circles at both sides. Apply glitter and let dry overnigh.
4. For a finishing touch, apply glue and glitter to the tips of the “tentacles.”
5. Dress your child in the purple clothing and hat, and tie the “tentacles” around his or her waist.
6. Snap! Take a picture.
